This is a frog of small streams and gullies in lowland primary and secondary forests; it can be found sitting in shallow water with the head emerged.

Its body colour is grey-brown or olive-brown, and mottling is common. Vertebral stripes are sometimes seen, and there is often a pale orange patch behind the head. The body is stocky, the hind legs muscular, and the hind feet fully webbed.

Occidozyga sumatrana has often been confused with Occidozyga laevis, but here we follow the convention that O. laevis is restricted to the Philippines.

The species ranges from Southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore to the islands of Sumatra, Java and Borneo.
